Auntie Cotton Candy: The Sweet Journey of Growth

After retiring, Auntie Cotton Candy chose to devote a significant part of her life to the Dr. Lam Chik Suen Senior Comprehensive Service Center. As a volunteer storyteller, she has been serving for nearly a decade. She started by participating in the Little Red Riding Hood intergenerational book club activities, gradually joining the Jockey Club 'Happy Ideas' intergenerational reading program, always maintaining her enthusiasm and promoting story reading.

As a volunteer, Auntie Cotton Candy has been involved in a multitude of activities, gaining a wealth of experience and learning the art of storytelling, organizing games, and planning events. She even proactively furthered her skills by participating in children's drama and puppet show training classes. Even during the severe impact of the pandemic, she kept up with the technological trends and learned how to host online events. These learning experiences not only boosted her confidence but deepened her passion for her role as a story volunteer.

In the big family of the Jockey Club “Sparkles of Happiness” Intergenerational Reading and Learning Project, Auntie Cotton Candy had the good fortune to meet many like-minded friends. They explored the joy of picture book reading together, took up the significant mission of story volunteers, and built a harmonious and lively team. Stories serve as bridges connecting people and mediums for emotional exchange. Each successful event, seeing the children listen attentively to the stories, their eyes sparkling with curiosity and anticipation, and their happy smiles and growth, brought her immense satisfaction.

Throughout this process, Auntie Cotton Candy's personality was greatly enhanced, and her leadership and interpersonal skills saw significant improvement. Now, she assists in training new volunteers, including seniors and parents, in the roles of assistant teacher and mentor. She enjoys sharing her years of experience in storytelling and event organization. She firmly believes in the power of stories to bring positive impact to the community, inspire more people to love reading picture books, and tell stories.
