Step Forward, Reclaim Happiness

When Mr. Chan had just turned 60 and was ready to enjoy his leisurely retirement, he suddenly found that he could not move the left side of his body. After being diagnosed by a doctor, it was confirmed that he had suffered an ischemic stroke. The once vibrant Mr. Chan became unable to take care of himself overnight, relying on his family for care around the clock. He could only blame himself every day, feeling pain and helplessness about his situation.

After being discharged from the hospital, Mr. Chan was referred to the Cheung Hing Wah Charitable Foundation Cheung Hang Rehabilitation Centre ("the Centre") by the senior center, where he met Miss Sin, the department director. When Miss Sin learned that Mr. Chan's deepest wish was to personally send his young son to kindergarten, she decided to make this "wish" Mr. Chan's rehabilitation goal, helping him regain the will to live.

Miss Sin and the professional team at the Centre designed a care plan for Mr. Chan, which included physical therapy, home environment modification, nursing skills training, and intensive rehabilitation training, among other services.

With the full support of the Centre, Mr. Chan was no longer dependent on a wheelchair within just half a year, and instead began to walk with the help of a walker. Witnessing Mr. Chan's ability to stand up again, Miss Sin decided to further encourage him to go out of the house and go to the football field downstairs for endurance and strength training, in order to rebuild his connection with the community.

After a year of intensive training, Mr. Chan finally realized his wish. He was able to leave the house and personally take his son to kindergarten. What once seemed like an unreachable goal has now become the moment that Mr. Chan looks forward to every day.

On the long road to recovery, the Centre will continue to work hand in hand with every elder and their families. Faced with setbacks, they will encourage each other to rise again, with the hope that everyone can achieve what they aspire to and reclaim their happiness.
